Picking it up feels like holding two halves of a DualSense that have been stretched around an 8-inch display, and despite the unusual width Smith found the grip settled into something properly balanced within minutes of regular use.
The 8-inch LCD display packs in enough vibrancy to make Remote Play feel purpose-built rather than improvised, even without HDR support. Pairing wirelessly with Sony’s PlayStation Link headsets adds hi-res, zero-latency audio to the picture, something the Portal handles without the USB dongle a PS5 alone would need.
Remote Play itself runs smoothly whenever the Wi-Fi connection holds steady, since the Portal is simply mirroring the PS5’s output while adaptive triggers and haptic feedback carry over from the DualSense without any noticeable drop-off.
Battery life lands at around six to seven hours of continuous play, which is plenty for a handheld whose entire job is filling the gaps when the main screen in the house is already taken by someone else.
